Adult services ads
Ads alluding to exchanges of cash for sexual services and seeking massage clients are still showing up in Casual Encounters section of Craigslist's websites in New York, Las Vegas and other parts of the country. The controversial Adult Services section on the classified advertisement site's homepage was replaced on Friday with a black and white "CENSORED" box that does not link, just days after a group of state attorneys general had released a statement that they believed the section should be eliminated. In the statement, attorneys general in 17 states said the site was aiding in illegal exploitation, prostitution and human trafficking. Craigslist has made no statement since the change to the site, so it is not clear whether the Adult Services section is being removed permanently.

The "adult services" listing on Craiglist was removed late Friday from its U. Craigslist did not announce the move and its blog was not updated as of Saturday morning. Craigslist did not immediately respond to e-mail and voice mail messages seeking comment. Adult services listings continue to be available outside the United States. The change comes as the service faces growing pressure in the U. It also charges fees in a handful of other areas, including New York apartment rentals. Police routinely conduct prostitution sting operations using its listings, as have some media outlets such as CNN, which has made it something of a mission to highlight the issue see below.

Craigslist is back in the hot seat over the Adult Services category on its popular classified advertising site. On Tuesday, the attorneys general from 17 states wrote an open letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster calling on him to "immediately" remove the Adult Services category from the Web site. They argued that removing the category would protect women and children who are often "victimized" because of ads for prostitution that they allege run on the site.

After it successfully pressured Craigslist to remove its adult services section, the brigade of attorneys general who believe that censoring the Internet is an effective way to combat sex trafficking continued to march on. Its next target of censorship: backpage. The adult services sections under attack contained mainly ads for legal services: massages, escorts and the like. But the AGs insist that since illegal activities like prostitution and child sex trafficking sometimes slip through the cracks, the entire adult services sections should be banned.
