In spite of the size, Great Danes are considered gentle giants, are moderately playful and good with children. However, an owner must be willing to accommodate the dog's great size in regard to space and feeding, which can be costly. Great Danes and other giant-breed dogs are susceptible to a condition known as bloat, which involves gas buildup and possible twisting of the stomach. Great Danes are huge, powerful and elegant dogs.
